National Council of Catholic Women’s Convention November 1-5, 2022
The National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) held their 102nd convention November 1-5, 2022 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Minnesota is the birthplace of the very first NCCW President, Gertrude Gavin, so we were proud to host the convention this year.
The convention theme was Wide Open Hearts Abiding in Faith, Hope and Love. Many Minnesota volunteers demonstrated their wide open hearts by greeting and assisting with unloading cars at the entrance of the convention and were always available to answer questions or assist in any way throughout the week which resulted in a warm welcoming experience for all involved.
Convention speakers included Sister Xavier Mariette Ezeokoll who serves at Sharing and Caring Hands, founded by Mary Jo Copeland, Elizabeth “Liz” Kelly trained Spiritual Director, retreat leader, and award winning author, and Yen Fasano who is a proud graduate of the College of St. Benedict who has dedicated her life to teaching in Catholic Schools from the inner cities of Memphis and Chicago to the suburbs of Cleveland and Minneapolis.
Attendees learned about the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis and his works to gather and share information of the Eucharistic Miracles of the World all before his death at the age of 15 from leukemia. Sister Xavier Mariette Ezeokoll shared stories of her service at Sharing and Caring Hands. Liz Kelly spoke of the Good Shepherd who always knows where we are and will not forget us. Yen Fasano reminded us that the door to our heart has no outside knob; it must be opened from the inside. The Breakfast speaker panel taught us that every experience brings you to the place God wants you to be. God writes straight with curvy lines.
Masses were celebrated daily by The Most Reverend William A Wack, CSC (NCCW Episcopal Liaison to the United States Council of Catholic Bishops), Very Reverend Miguel Gonzalez (Chair of the NCCW Spiritual Advisors), Most Reverend Bernard A. Hebda (Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis), and Most Reverend Joseph A. William (Auxillary Bishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis). Each celebrant had his own inspirational message to share.
Donated items were collected for Sharing and Caring Hands, our featured charity. Other activities included a sightseeing tour of Minneapolis, pizza and game night, a purse auction (with crazy bidders), silent auction, vendor exhibits, a Native Pride Dancer who share cultural stories and teachings about the blend of modern and traditional Native American dance styles that were performed, evening sing-alongs lead by Jeanette Fortier, and a quiet meditation room was also available.
